DEVON runners came out well on top in the overall standings of the 2014/15 Brooks Westward Cross Country League.
Members of Devon clubs won 13 of the 21 individual titles awarded following the sixth and final match at Redruth with Exmouth’s Tom Merson – who made it six wins out of six – and Exeter University student Steph McCall leading the way by claiming the senior prizes.
But interestingly on the team front Cornish clubs picked up six titles against Devon’s three so maybe they are more effective in getting out bigger numbers on a more consistent basis?
The most prestigious of the team prizes is clearly the senior and on that front Cornwall AC’s senior men will be delighted to have kept hold of their crow despite a spirited challenge from Exmouth Harriers by 293 points.
Their spirit is no better epitomised than by former GB marathon international Dave Buzza, who long after most of his contemporaries have hung up their racing spikes is still out there acing and encouraging the next generation.
Buzza finished sixth overall and easily top veteran over 50 with a perfect score of 500.
